Professor John Wang

Professor John Wang is currently the Dean of Office of Graduate Studies and Professional Learning at the National Institute of Education (NIE), Singapore. He also leads the Motivation in Educational Research Lab (MERL), NIE. He is a Visiting Fellow of Loughborough University and Visiting Professors of Tianjin University of Sport, and a few other universities in China.

John Wang is a Chartered Psychologist and Associate Fellow of British Psychological Society and he is registered with the Health Professions Council of UK as a Sport and Exercise Psychologist.

He obtained his PhD from Loughborough University in the United Kingdom in Sport and Exercise Psychology. Dr. Wang currently teaches sport psychology, exercise psychology, research methods, measurement and evaluation and various sport modules in NIE. He also works closely with teachers, coaches, national athletes, and school athletes in mental preparation for peak performance, as well as with school children in increasing exercise participation.

His areas of research include motivational and emotional aspects of physical activity and academic domains. His recent publications have been on sport ability beliefs, achievement goals, intrinsic motivation, emotion, and self-esteem. He is an established researcher in the areas of achievement goal theory and self-determination theory and is enrolled as a faculty in the Self-Determination Theory in University of Rochester. In addition, he also wrote papers on outdoor education, project work, internet gaming, and problem-based learning. His strength is also in statistical analyses, structural equation modeling, multilevel analysis, and latent growth curves analyses.

To date, Dr. Wang has published more than 200 research publications ranging from books, book chapters, monographs, refereed articles, conference papers, and research reports. His work is widely cited internationally.

Most of his works are published in top journals in the area of Sport Psychology, such as Journal of Sport and Exercise Psychology and Journal of Sports Sciences, and education psychology, such as British Journal of Educational Psychology, Journal of Educational Research, etc.

He is also a member of the editorial board for International Journal of Sport and Exercise Psychology (Section Editor), International Journal of Asian Society for PE, Sport, & Dance (Associate Editor), European Physical Education Review, Frontiers in Movement Science and Sport Psychology, Psychology Research, Journal of Tianjin Institute of Physical Education and Scientific Journals International.
