WELCOME MESSAGE
Welcome to the Motivation in Educational Research Laboratory (MERL) at the National Institute of Education (NIE), Singapore!
Motivation is one of the central issues in human affairs. Understanding its role in human behaviour is important as we strive to educate our children and prepare them to be the self-directed and lifelong learners of the 21st Century. However, despite being an important topic, there are still gaps in our understanding of the phenomenon in our schools, classrooms and sports. In particular, a lot more can be done in the Asian context to translate research findings into real life applications. It is in this light that the MERL is set up.
NIE is committed to the vision of being an institute of distinction and our mission of creating a world-class institute renowned for its excellence in teacher education and educational research. The establishment of MERL is in line with our strategic vision of pursuing international recognition through conducting quality educational research, impacting the educational fraternity globally, and meeting the needs of the stakeholders. I am confident that MERL will be able to fill the current gaps in Singapore's education system and that of the region.
We look forward to your support of the MERL and welcome you to our Institute.
